barrier and fortifications erected by East Germany around West Berlin (a West German exclave surrounded by East Germany) starting in 1961 to stem the flow of migrants from East Germany to West Berlin

Note: The Berlin Wall was opened to border crossings by East and West Germans in 1989 and was officially dismantled after the reunification of East Germany and West Germany the following year.
